Sizing your TV stand

The stand should be wider than the TV — aim for at least 6 inches clear on each side. It looks better and it is safer. A 55-inch TV measures about 48 inches wide, so a 60-inch stand is a sensible minimum. Check your TV's actual width rather than its diagonal screen size, which is what the model number refers to.

Height matters too: the centre of the screen should sit roughly at eye level when you are seated, which usually means a stand between 20 and 24 inches tall for a standard sofa.
