Why a futon still makes sense

In a one-bedroom apartment or a den that has to double as a guest room, a futon does two jobs for the price and footprint of one. Metal futon frames are lighter and cheaper than a sofa bed, far easier to carry up a stairwell or into an elevator, and there is no heavy pull-out mechanism to fail.

Frames and mattresses

Futon frames and futon mattresses are usually sold separately, which lets you match the thickness and firmness you want. Check each product page — it states clearly whether a mattress is included. Note that futon mattresses cannot be returned once the packaging is opened, for hygiene reasons.

Alternatives worth comparing
