Counter height or bar height?

This is the only question that really matters, and it is the one people get wrong. Measure from the floor to the underside of your counter, then allow 10–12 inches of legroom.

• Counter height — seat around 24–26 inches. For a standard kitchen counter or island at 36 inches.
• Bar height — seat around 29–32 inches. For a raised bar or pub table at 40–42 inches.
• Adjustable — gas lift stools that cover both. The safe choice if you are unsure or might move.

Spacing

Allow about 26–30 inches of counter width per stool so nobody is bumping elbows. A standard 6-foot island comfortably seats three.

Backless stools tuck fully under the counter and disappear when not in use — worth considering in a small kitchen. Swivel seats make getting in and out easier where space is tight.
