The most common furniture mistake in Toronto is buying a sofa that fits the room but not the route into it. Condo living rooms are small, hallways are narrow, and service elevators have hard limits. Here is how to choose a sofa or sectional for a GTA condo, starting with the measurements rather than the styling.
Measure the route before the room
Write down four numbers before you shop:
- Front door width — with the door open, measure the narrowest point of the frame.
- Hallway width — and note any 90-degree turns. A turn is more restrictive than a straight run.
- Elevator depth, width and door width — all three. A sofa that fits the car may not fit through the door diagonally.
- Ceiling height at the tightest point — you can often stand a sofa on end to get it round a corner, but only if there is headroom.
Then compare against the product's packaged dimensions, not just the assembled ones. A sofa that arrives in two boxes solves a lot of problems that a one-piece sofa does not.
What actually fits a condo living room
Rough guidance for typical GTA condo footprints:
