A complete bedroom set in the GTA usually means a bed frame plus some combination of dresser, mirror, chest and nightstand. Walk into a traditional Toronto furniture store and a matching set will typically start somewhere north of $2,000. Online, and especially from retailers without showroom overhead, the same category starts far lower. Here is what under $1,000 actually buys in Toronto right now, and what to watch for.
What "bedroom set" actually means
This trips people up more than anything else. Retailers use the phrase three different ways:
- Bed only — headboard, footboard and rails. No mattress, no case goods.
- Bed plus case goods — the bed, plus a dresser, mirror and one or two nightstands. Sometimes a chest.
- Everything including mattress — rare at this price, and usually a sign the mattress is an afterthought.
When you compare two listings at similar prices, check exactly which pieces are included before anything else. A $900 "bedroom set" that includes a dresser, mirror and two nightstands is a completely different purchase from a $900 bed frame.
Realistic price bands in the GTA
Based on what is currently available online across the Toronto market:
- $120–$300 — Bed frame only. Metal frames, basic platform beds, simple upholstered beds in Single and Double. At LUMA HOME, bed frames start at $119.
- $300–$600 — Better bed frames: hydraulic lift storage beds, velvet and bouclé upholstered beds, Queen and King sizes. Or a bed plus one case good.
- $600–$1,000 — This is where a genuine multi-piece set becomes possible, especially if you buy pieces individually rather than as a bundle. Individual bedroom pieces — nightstands, chests, dressers — start around $179 each.
- $1,000+ — Full collections with LED headboards, hydraulic storage, built-in USB charging and matching everything.
The single biggest saving: skip the box spring
A platform bed supports the mattress directly on slats or a solid base. No box spring needed. A box spring in the GTA runs roughly $100–$250 depending on size, so choosing a platform design over a traditional frame effectively knocks that off your total.
Not every bed is a platform bed, and not every listing makes it obvious. Look for the phrase "no box spring required" explicitly. If a product page does not say, ask before ordering — discovering you need an extra $200 part after delivery is a miserable surprise.
Buy the pieces separately
Bundled sets look like better value than they usually are. Most people do not need the mirror. Plenty of bedrooms fit one nightstand, not two. If a retailer lists collection pieces individually, price out only what you will actually use — it is common to save $200–$400 versus the bundle.
Watch the delivery line
This is where Toronto furniture pricing gets slippery. A set advertised at $899 with a $150 delivery charge is a $1,049 set. Some retailers charge by distance, some by order size, some add a fuel surcharge, and many only reveal it at the final checkout step.

Measure before you fall in love
Three measurements save most of the returns we hear about:
- The room — a Queen bed needs about 60" of width plus walking space on at least one side. In a Toronto condo bedroom, that is often the whole room.
- The path in — doorway width, hallway turns, elevator depth. Flat-packed furniture solves most of this, but headboards and dressers arrive assembled more often than you would think.
- Ceiling and window height — relevant for tall headboards and for chests that block a window sill.
Canadian bed sizes, decoded
Canadian retailers usually list beds by mattress width in inches, which confuses buyers used to American naming:
- 39" = Single (Twin)
- 54" = Double (Full)
- 60" = Queen
- 78" = King
A "54-inch bedroom set" is a Double. If you are replacing a mattress you already own, match the width number and you cannot go wrong.
What to prioritise if the budget is genuinely tight
Spend on the mattress and the bed frame. Those affect your sleep every night. Case goods — dressers, nightstands, chests — can be added later, or bought one at a time as budget allows. A good platform bed with a decent mattress and a single nightstand beats a full matching set built around a mattress you regret.
